On-Grid Solar

On-grid or grid-tie solar systems are by far the most common and widely used by homes and businesses. These systems do not need batteries and use common solar inverters and are connected to the public electricity grid. Any excess solar power that you generate is exported to the electricity grid and you usually get paid a feed-in-tariff (FiT) or credits for the energy you export. The on-grid system works in sync with the grid, unlike inverter, there is no limitation in the grid-tied system, you can run everything of your home on the grid-tied solar system. For an example, a 1 kW on grid system can run 5 kW power.

Off-Grid Solar

An off-grid system is not connected to the electricity grid and therefore requires battery storage. It is designed to work independent of the grid i.e store solar power in batteries for use when the power grid goes down or if you are not on the grid. Most home appliances such as TV, cooler, AC, pump etc. can work through this system. For instance, a 1 kW off grid solar system is sufficient for a 2-4 BHK house. But if you also want to run 1 W pump in your home you could use a 3 kW solar system. If you are planning to run an AC then you should use a 5 kW system. For commercial setups like a shop, clinic or small mill, a 10 kW off-grid solar system should be used.

Hybrid Solar

Modern hybrid systems combine solar and battery storage in one and are now available in many different forms and configurations. Due to the decreasing cost of battery storage, systems that are already connected to the electricity grid can start taking advantage of battery storage as well. This means being able to store solar energy that is generated during the day and using it at night. When the stored energy is depleted, the grid is there as a back up, allowing consumers to have the best of both worlds. Hybrid Systems are also able to charge the batteries using cheap off-peak electricity (usually after midnight to 6am).
